Root Chakra Smokey Quartz

Start At The Root Chakra

The root chakra is our energetic foundation. A grounding cord that connects us to the earth and our physical body; helping to center our being and regulate our energy. Located at the base of the spine, it’s the first of the seven main chakras of the human energy field. For this reason, the health of our root chakra determines the health of the other 6 chakras that sit above it. As a result, when this chakra is balanced and healthy we feel stable, secure and present in life.

However, when there’s an imbalance in the root it’s common for the chakras above it to not function optimally. For this reason, we must nourish the roots in order for the seed to grow into a healthy flower. Just like a tree with shallow roots will fall over in a wind storm, we must have a solid base to hold us. If the energy of our root is unstable, the energy of the rest of our chakas will also be out of alignment.

Consequently, with an unbalanced root chakra, life may feel overwhelming, stressful, unsafe & like there isn’t enough to go around. You may feel anxious, depressed, fearful, restless, disorganized, exhausted, sluggish, disconnected from your body and have difficulty coping with change. For this reason, prolonged imbalances to the root chakra can lead to financial instability, illness, burn out and adrenal fatigue.

What Does Grounding Mean?

For example, a grounding system is used with electrical appliances to redirect excess energy into the ground. This eliminates the possibility of getting a big shock and we can think of grounding and connecting to our root chakra in this exact way. Thus, in strengthening our root chakra, we are regulating our flow of energy to keep our system balanced. Without an outlet to redirect and release excess energy into, this energy continues to build up in our system. Hence, we end up living in a state of constant hyper drive. An imbalanced root leads to instability and burn out as we (quite literally) burn out our fuse.

In conclusion, grounding is an outlet to release and regulate your energy. Grounding is about prioritizing time throughout the day to slow down and check in with yourself. In fact, this moment of slowing down provides an opportunity to re-set. Grounding is about connecting in with nature, your physical body or present time. When grounding, imagine any tension, worry or anxiety releasing from your body into the ground below you.

Daily Healing Practices for Grounding:

  • Movement such as, Yoga, Pilates, Dance or just simple Stretching are great forms of grounding that connect your mind/body through movement. Movement naturally releases built up energy and a regular practice offers stability/support. Therefore, do what you can. 10 minutes a day is even great to start with!
  • Take regular stretching + walking breaks during your day.
  • Take time to unplug and pour yourself a cup of herbal tea to soothe your nerves.
  • Keep a journal close by to write down your thoughts throughout the day.
  • Self Reiki + Meditations that connect your mind with your body are great ways to practice regular grounding because they help you connect your mind with your emotions and physical body.
  • Earthing/walking barefoot is fantastic for grounding but so is just getting out & spending time in nature.
  • Go for a walk & get fresh air while you pay attention to what you see, hear & feel.
  • Garden or adopt houseplants. Our green friends help clean the air and remind us that things are constantly changing + growing. Thus, they teach us to listen to their subtle cues and to pay attention to our environment.
  • Dark Brown & Red crystals are associated with the root chakra (Smokey Quartz is my number 1 go to). Therefore, you can keep a grounding stone in your purse, car, pocket or desk so you have one near you throughout the day. In addition, grounding stones are great to have near electronics.
  • When washing dishes or cleaning the house remain aware of your thoughts. Meaning, if your mind begins to wander off, consciously return your attention to the task at hand.
  • Focus on your breathing and controlling the pace of your breath. Undoubtedly, this is once of the simplest ways to find your center again.
